Text Play: Lufia and the Fortress of Doom (Taito, 1993, SNES) Issue #010: Medan, Sorry...

No summoners here, either, I'm afraid.

We've gotta go along the west coast of the peninsula or whatever landform the Northwest Tower is on. It doesn't take long before we get to a small town called Kiroff, where we'll have an important bit shortly. Just north of town is a cave that's full of ghosts, ghouls, demons and other evil spooks that can do some serious damage to even the most well-prepared adventurers who go in. There's a guy guarding the entrance who says he's there to keep kids from wandering in, which is a bit of foreshadowing.

When we actually get into Kiroff, it's another small village with an inn as its only functioning service. There was an item shop, too, but the guy running it says he's going out of business because his daughter's in a bad way with some mystery illness and he needs to take care of her instead.,

In the back of the shop, the little girl, named Reyna, is getting a visit from her friend Mark, who's doing his best to make her feel better. Mark's telling her all about his having a plan to help her get well. He's from the castle town of Medan, see, and they've got this supposedly magic gem called the Hope Ruby that can grant wishes. His plan is to talk to the king and see if he can bring it to her so they can literally wish her well. Reyna tries to talk him out of it, but Mark won't take no for an answer and heads back home to try making it happen, which means it's up to us to go after him and see if we can't get this sorted somehow.

When we get to the town of Medan, there's upgrades for everybody's equipment in the shops, so I took advantage of that before taking advantage of the inn and save point. On our way to the castle, we run into Mark again, who says the king told him no, so he's going to have to find another way. I don't know if I just missed something when I went looking, but I didn't find the king. I did, however, find the princess and the guy who empties the coins from the pool in the basement under fountain the ruby's displayed in. The princess is all upset because she thinks people are getting ripped off by wishing on a ruby that doesn't have any power, which would be bad enough if the ruby on display wasn't a Vreenak Special in reality, but the guy gathering the coins says that's most of the town's economy, sadly.

In the upper chamber, where the supposed ruby is, there's a bit where Lufia tosses a coin in to make a wish, tells the hero to ask her what the wish was, then refuses to tell him, but that's just flavor text, I think.

Once all that's done, we see Mark go zinging out of the castle with a soldier in hot pursuit, with the implication being that Mark's gone and jacked the ruby, not knowing that it isn't a genuine article. This means following him back to Kiroff to set things right there. Of course, by the time we get there, we find that Reyna has gotten up somehow and wandered into that cave full of ghosts. Mark says he'll join up with us to go in and get his friend back.

If I'd have done the smart thing here, I'd have gone back to Medan and saved, but I just had to balls it and go through the cave right away. Even made it to the boss well enough. Unfortunately, I got my ass kicked. By the time that happened, I decided to take the loss and revive and save at Medan and just do some grinding before next time in hopes of doing better then. Until then, stay safe, have fun, keep gaming, and DFTBA!
