There's a few reasons, but there's kind of a big one right now.
One might think it's some sort of health issue, but that's not quite it this time. See, a couple days prior to writing this post, Microsoft ended support for its Windows 10 operating system. They'd at least been decent enough to give us a year's notice about it so we could have a little prep time in advance of that. I'd intended to take advantage of it and actually replace at least my desktop PC before the official cutoff date arrived, but I did what I usually do in this sort of situation and that didn't happen until the day itself arrived, and even then, I might have still put it off for a couple days on account of there being a few things I wanted to do beforehand. I might have gotten them done, had something not gone all screwy with what I think was my antivirus software that goofed my Internet connection.
I eventually got it sorted, but by then, I'd missed the big thing I'd hoped to do with the desktop system I'd been using for the last ten years, more or less, so I figured it was time to just go ahead and finally buy a modern system. I'd had one in mind at Best Buy for awhile anyway, so I decided to have them set the thing up and transfer my data, at least, over to the new machine. As I write this, I'm still waiting on that. The good news is that I still have an older laptop to work and post from. The down side to that is that the machine I'm working on at the moment is a roughly fifteen year old hand-me-down that my parents got for my Grandma Jean so she could play the card games she'd taken a liking to after she'd gotten one of the old desktop units from them. With that in mind, it should go without saying that this thing really hasn't been particularly well maintained or kept in the best of conditions over the last decade and a half, on top of between having been transferred between three owners in that time.
And like I was saying, or at least implying, above, this thing's fifteen years old, and was probably about as basic as one of these things came in 2010 or whenever it was originally purchased. Even with the best of care and maintenance, it's not likely that it was ever intended to last quite this long, considering this modern era of disposable tech we're in these days. Considering what both my desktop and my current net-ready laptop have been through, it's really no surprise that they've been sputtering along like the AMC Crow from that one MST3K host segment as the months have rolled on.
I might get a more modern laptop at some point, but once I get my desktop unit back, I'm going to focus on dealing with my health and my car first and then saving up for the laptop. Part of what added to the cost of the PC was that I needed to get a new monitor as well, because the one I had before only had a VGA connection, and it seems most modern systems only take HDMI monitors, from what I can tell. It's handy to have a laptop, of course, but not exactly necessary for what I do, at least at present. That may change going forward, because I'm still not entirely sure where I'm going with all this just yet, even after all these years. I'm sure I'll get at least some of it figured out eventually, and having a computer that can actually handle more of the workload will help with that.
See you soon with something along those lines, I hope.
