TEXT PLAY: Final Fantasy IX (PlayStation, 2000, Square-Enix): Issue #039: Choco-Born

So maybe the Black Mages are more human than they realize.

I did figure out where I needed to land our sailing ship, the Blue Narcissis, last time. Turns out, I was one beach too far west.

When I got to the Village, the place was empty, save for three Mages tending two critical areas of town. Mr. 288 was in the cemetary, saying that everybody save for himself and two others have gone with Kuja because he said he would extend their lives if they helped him. Beyond that, he won't say anything because he doesn't want to turn on the others. At the other end of the village, Mr. 33 and Mr 111 are watching over the Chocobo egg, which has just hatched. They're amazed at what they've just seen and are really proud of themselves for having managed to hatch the thing. They say they have a funny feeling that they don't understand as a result.

As Zidane and Vivi leave the nursery, they run into Mr. 288 again, and Vivi explains that when he saw the Qu he called his grandfather pass, he didn't feel sad because that's what his grandfather had wanted, even though he didn't get why not. He explained further that for the longest time after, he didn't really understand the emotions that came with being conscious, but when Queen Bhrane was killed and Dagger was broken up over it in spite of how evil the queen was, Vivi realized that it was OK to feel sad about such things, and maybe even good. If they were all puppets like Mr. 288 and Kuja would have them believe, he would never have felt that way or been able to figure it out. 288 says he wishes and hopes the others will come to be like Vivi one day, telling him and Zidane that Kuja and the other Mages are at Kuja's headquarters in a palace someplace on the east end of the continent.

Later on, Dagger is having her own thoughts on the matter. She's realizing that she has needed to change since day one of all of this and it hasn't happened yet, which is part of why she can't speak at present. Eiko comes along a moment later, telling her things will work out, and Dagger will find her voice again soon enough.

As far as story-related material goes, this is all I got done this time around. I did put some time into level grinding for Frey and Quina, especially, because they still need a few levels and abilities that will come in handy going forward. Mostly, it was because I was looking for a Synth shop, if possible, or a regular weapons shop if not. The weapons shop in Conde Pettie didn't have anything I could use, and neither did the moogle selling things in Madain Sari, and I couldn't find a Synth shop in Conde Pettie, if there was one.

The good news is that we're at one of those points that Final Fantasy games had gotten somewhat famous for even by the time this installment came out in 2000, where we'll be just finding some decent equipment around again, even though we won't be buying any in shops for awhile. All the same, though, it would be nice to have some new stuff ready to put on before we get to Kuja's place. I might see if I can deal with that in someplace like Lindblum before I get on with that. I'll say something either way next time. Until then, stay safe, have fun, keep gaming, and DFTBA.
