TEXT PLAY: Lufia and the Fortress of Doom (Taito, SNES 1993): Issue #02: Livin' On A Prayer

We're just beginning, but by the time our lovebirds do get together, we're about halfway to our destination this time.

One thing I forgot to do last time was visit the village of Chattam, which is about halfway between Alekia and Sheran. Had I gone there, I might not have spent so much time, ya know, getting eaten alive by the monsters, but too late for that now. But I also would have met a dude named Danil, who says he's worried about his sister Lilah, who works at Sheran Castle. When we go there now, with Lufia with us, everybody else in town says that Danil went on his own and had gone missing too. We'll find him in the pass that leads to the castle, and it seems he's gotten knocked on his ass in a fight with the monsters there. Not gonna lie, those monsters can be tough little fuckers, if you'll forgive the language. We tell him that we've got this and he should go back to Chattam. He does, giving us the pass key to the castle.

But before all of that, we need to get out of Alekia. The trip to Chattam this time is pretty much all cutscene, where Lufia all but tells the hero that she loves him, and he pretty much says the feeling's mutual, and that they'll go on this adventure together and try to keep each other safe. That's going to be a little hard to do once we get to Sheran, and it doesn't get much easier after that.

Sheran Castle is the place to go right out of the cave, because everybody in the town says the same stuff as before. There are plenty of goodies to be had in the castle, all worth getting. The healing items especially will come in handy. There's a switch in a locked room just off the throne room that opens the way down to the dungeon, where the king, Lilah, and one other non-playable character have been locked up by whoever attacked the place. At this point, we let them out with the intent of taking them back to Alekia.

Of course, this doesn't quite go as planned, because some monsters show up, lead by a guy with weird red hair. It's Gades, who's name I misspelled last time. Jesse the hero tells Lufia to take the NPCs and get the hell out while he deals with Gades. I was low on HP when I went into this one, but it wasn't worth using any restorative items, because this is one of those “butter knife versus tank” sort of things, where the hero has to loose in order to advance the plot. After I swat at him four or five times, Gades pretty much cuts me in two.

Soon as the fight ends, Lufia shows up and somehow manages to chase Gades off. The baddie promises he'll see us again one day and leaves. Lufia then explains that the knights are still back at base doing their whole “Should we do something?” bit that I talked about before and somehow warps us back to Alekia.

This time, we have a very serious chat with Roman, who pretty much tells us to get out there and save the world once we've taken Lilah back to Chattam because it's our destiny. But that's for next time. This is going to be a long trip, I think.
