TEXT PLAY: Final Fantasy 4 (SNES, 1991): Issue #20: Return Of The Fiends

This promises to be a bit longer and potentially more interesting than the last couple.

So, once we've got Bahamut along for the ride, it's back to good old Earth, where we find that we're too late to stop the Giant of Bab-Il from coming back to life. Like I said before, this really wouldn't have mattered. It would have happened anyway because it's what happens next in the story even if we don't get Bahamut.

So let's just get into this, shall we?

As soon as we get back to Earth, the Giant of Bab-Il shows up and starts blowing the hell out of everything in sight. FoSoYa says you're too late to prevent the attack, but like I said an issue or two ago, this would have happened even if we'd come straight here instead of going after Bahamut first. But at least we can stop the attack.

Doing exactly that is made much easier with help from the Dwarves, who somehow managed to get Yang out of the Sylph Cave and then bring their tanks out of the Underground, and from Cid and a fleet of Airships, who also has Edward, the Mysidian Elder and Palom and Porum, who the Elder somehow got the petrification off of, on various ships. Cid comes down and takes the party to the Giant's mouth so they can go on in and take out the Giant's main computer.

Along the way, there are a few interesting things that happen. One is that instead of having the standard B1-B2-B3 floor structure that most dungeons do, this one has the levels named after various body parts, as in Mouth, Neck, et cetera on down to Stomach, I believe.

Perhaps one of my favorite guarded chests of all time is in this dungeon. There's one on one of the later levels that has an Elixer in it. The monster guarding it is called the Last Arm. This is the only one of these in the game, and if you attack it in just the right way, it does a rather unique counter attack called Fission. Yeah, as in the technical name for the splitting of atoms in nuclear reactions. If FoSoYa, or Ryidia if she has it, uses the Nuke spell on it, it'll do Fission. Sure, it'll damage the entire party, but it'll also be the end of the Last Arm.

Not long after, it's the last battle against the Four Fiends of Elements. They tell you that Zemus brought them back to life so they could stop you for him. This fight is one that's always been about fifty-fifty for me. There's a save point on the level above where the Fiends are, but I never use it just in case I need to build up my levels on the moon before I go in and work my way to this point. Fortunately, this time around I made it through with no trouble, so I went and saved before I went on to the main boss battle here, against the Giant's CPU.

The CPU is made up of three orbs. One's an attacker, one's a defender, and the third and largest is the CPU. Kinda gotta be careful here and just take out the defender first, avoiding the attack orb as much as possible. Take them both out, and the main one will hit you with something called Globe199. That attack can take out any one of the party members it hits in one shot, and there's no defense against it. The maser hits of the attacker are far more bearable, and the lower damage is easier to fix. The only downside for me is that the main CPU part of this boss casts Wall on itself so that it's protected against magic attacks. Worse yet, it seemed to recast it's wall spell just as I used a Black Magic spell on it, so I wound up blasting my own guys a few times instead.

But eventually, I did beat the thing. After the main core of the robot explodes, Golbez shows up again, cursing the party for ending his plan. Granted, this is supposed to be a face turn here, but it makes Golbez look like a real moron. We're supposed to think his plan was to take over the world, not destroy it.

FoSoYa does some kind of magic on Golbez, breaking him free of that Zemus guy we heard about on the moon. Golbez then remembers his dad's name, thereby revealing that he's Cecil's brother. Golbez and FuSoYa go running off to the moon so that the former can get revenge. The Giant begins to collapse and Kain shows up to lead the party back out.

Back on the Big Whale, Kain rejoins the party and says that Edge can kill him if Kain falls under Zemus' control again.

Once all that's decided, Cecil decides it's time for the party to head off to the moon, too. He tells Rosa and Rydia to get off the ship because he wants them to be safe. Edge takes the opportunity to be a dick to Rydia. Not much of a spoiler here, Edge has a crush on Rydia.

The ladies begrudgingly get off the ship, or at least they seem to, and the men go to the moon to stir up the final fight. When they get there, the men find a surprise.

Seems Rosa and Rydia didn't get off the ship, and Rosa sweet talks the pair back onto the team because she actually loves Cecil enough that she can't stand to be without him.

I could go right on to the last part of the story here, but there are a few last side items I want to take care of first, so we'll get to those in issue 21: Excalibur Side Items.
