Because they've been kind of a theme in
movie making in recent years.
I'm sure franchise reboot movies aren't
exactly what one might call a new thing at this point in
entertainment history. The first one I remember seeing was the Mark
Whalberg Planet of the Apes in 2004 or 2005.
Since then, it seems like they've
become more common. There was the JJ Abrams Star Trek movie in 2009,
a few Alvin and the Chipmunks movies in recent years, three
live-action Transformers movies in the same time frame, and even
Ninja Turtles, soon to be twice in about five years.
I get the fan backlash towards some of
this, of course. After all, we're dealing with popular, established
franchises and characters here. Fans don't always like changes to
those things.
But not so long ago, I watched a
Nostalgia Critic video about his thoughts on the upcoming Turtles
reboot, where they're reported to be aliens instead of
chemical-induced mutants. I quite liked what he was saying about it.
Basically, he was saying that it might be so completely different
that it might actually be good, something the franchise really needs.
After all, the Ninja Turtles franchise is the better part of 30
years old now and could maybe use some decent freshening up.
From the sounds of things, the Critic
may very well be going into this new Turtles movie the way I came out
of the Abrams Trek reboot. It wasn't the movie or the story I was
expecting it to be or hoping for, but it was still pretty damned
good. After all, by the time the movie came out, the original series
had been over for 40 years, and the generation that grew up with it
had gone from kids to grandparents at the very least. Times have
changed drastically over the years, and as much as I like the classic
Trek series and cast headed up by William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and
DeForrest Kelly, I must admit, it was interesting seeing those
characters as they might have been had they been created in more
modern times. Maybe the same can be said for this new Ninja Turtles
movie that's set to come out sometime this year.
And for those that might be curious,
here's
what the Nostalgia Critic had to say about the as-yet unreleased
Turtles movie.
